Cargill Meat Solutions Corp. of Springdale, Arkansas has recalled 36 million pounds of ground turkey products that my be contaminated with a multi-drug resistant strain of Salmonella Heidelberg, according to the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.
Many people throughout the U.S. have allegedly become ill from ground turkey, some resulting in death, with the highest number in California.
Diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps are the most obvious symptoms, usually occurring 12 to 72 hours after infection.
While fast food chains currently advertise turkey burgers as healthy alternatives, be sure to ask cooks, butchers, and meat counter staff where their ground turkey came from. It seems wise to avoid any turkey products from Cargill.
